Guaranteed blanket of snow

Traditions are maintained in Bodenmais. Such as the tradition that the cross-country skiing season only starts when enough snow has fallen. You glide only on natural snow on 114 km of perfectly prepared cross-country ski trails. On your winter holiday in Bodenmais, you won’t find any water or snow depots or ugly snow cannons on the meadows or in the woods. The natural white blanket comes only from the sky and 100% from Frau Holle herself.

The snow blanket is (virtually) guaranteed by January at the latest. That’s what Bodenmais is known for. And for the Bretterschachten cross-country skiing centre. And it’s all due to the favourable location of between 1,100 and 1,300 metres above sea level. Even in times when some winter regions struggle with a lack of snow. It’s not uncommon to find a snow covering of 100 to 150 centimetres here.

A cross-country skiing holiday in Bodenmais offers not only enough snow, but also enough variety – for both beginners and experienced skiers. Beginners can do gentle laps around the stadium in the Bretterschachten centre, while experienced skiers set off along the 18 km or trails alongside the Großer Arber. And hobby skiers? They can take a break and enjoy some hot coffee at the cosy Chamer Hütte at over 1,300 m. Rounded off with wide-reaching views of the Bavarian Forest.

Higher and Higher: Bavaria's Longest High-Altitude Cross-Country Ski Trail

A special experience and a true delight in every sense of the word when cross-country skiing in Bodenmais is a round on the 30 km Auerhahn Trail – the longest high-altitude trail in Bavaria. This impressive trail runs continuously up and down at the foot of the Großer Arber – from the Bretterschachten activity center to Eck. Simply stopping at the rustic Schareben mountain hut, halfway through in the middle of a forest, makes the effort worthwhile.
